Business context
The client is a USA imaging technology company that sells into oil and gas drilling. Their imaging produces 3D mesh data of drilling features, and its value to customers depends on how well engineers can inspect and dimension it. A raw mesh file is not something an engineer can act on.
The challenge
The client needed a tool to measure and cross-section drilling mesh data. The data arrived in several mesh formats, STL, OBJ and PLY, and engineers had to work with it directly. Measuring between points on a dense surface and cutting clean sections through it must be accurate and still respond in real time in a browser.
Our solution
We built web-based 3D measurement software with three.js and React. Files load by drag and drop, engineers measure and cut the mesh interactively, and results can be saved, shared and exported as images or video.
- Drag and drop of STL, OBJ and PLY files
- Export and import of measurement data
- Flat, glossy, smooth, wireframe, textured and reflective shading
- Rotation, translation and inside-out animation
- Interactive 3D distance measurement
- Interactive XY, YZ and ZX cross-sections, with a dedicated viewport for the XY cut
- Snapshot and video export
Business impact
Engineers can visualize and study dimensioned data.
- The client's imaging output becomes a working inspection tool for its drilling customers, not only a data file
- Engineers check geometry in a browser, without installing desktop 3D software
- Saved measurements can be reloaded later, so an inspection can be reviewed or repeated by another engineer
- Snapshots and videos give engineers material for reports and discussions with teams who do not use the tool
