Business context
The client is an engineering software company in Australia. Its users work with mechanical components and need dimensions from 3D models. That design geometry was locked in desktop CAD, out of reach for anyone without a CAD seat. Opening it to more people in the browser was part of what the client's product had to offer.
The challenge
The client's users needed to measure mechanical components in 3D without installing desktop CAD. Measurement had to be precise and run in a standard browser. Wall thickness in particular depends on the part's full geometry, not just what is on screen.
Our solution
We built a web-based 3D measurement app with three.js and WebGL that runs in Chrome, Firefox and Edge. The model loads in the browser and users pick points, edges and faces directly on the part. Measurement logic runs on the part geometry itself, so results do not depend on the camera view, and nothing needs to be installed.
- Interactive distance and angle measurement
- Radius and point information
- Bounding box
- Wall thickness
Business impact
The client can visualize dimensioned data of mechanical parts.
- Reviewers and quality staff check dimensions without a CAD licence or install
- Design geometry becomes usable downstream, in review and inspection, straight from the browser
- The client offers browser-based measurement as part of its own software
- Suppliers and customers can be shown part dimensions without receiving native CAD files
