Business context

The client is a USA oil and gas drilling company. Its analysts produce 3D data and 2D charts that people inside and outside the company need to review. That data is commercially sensitive, so who sees what had to be controlled.

The challenge

The client needed a role-based app for visualizing 3D data and 2D charts. 3D scenes, charts and KPIs had to sit together in dashboards, while each user saw only what their role allowed. External viewers also needed access without accounts, but that access could not stay open indefinitely.

Our solution

We built a full-stack web application with Node.js and PostgreSQL on the backend and React, d3.js and three.js on the frontend. AWS Cognito handles authentication and the app runs on AWS EC2.

  • Authentication with AWS Cognito
  • Admin, analyst, end-user and guest roles
  • Admins onboard users; analysts create projects and upload 3D and 2D data
  • Multiple dashboards with KPIs and an embedded 3D viewer
  • Share links for unauthenticated users with a set validity period
  • User geography tracking

Business impact

Role-based access control over the client's data.

  • Analysts publish 3D results and charts themselves, in their own projects, while admins keep control of who has access
  • Decision makers read KPIs and the related 3D view in one place, instead of switching between files and tools
  • Partners and customers can review results through a link that expires, so sharing does not mean losing control of the data
  • Usage by location gives the client a view of where its data is being accessed
