Business context
The client is a mining software company in the USA. Its users hold survey data as DXF and GeoJSON files: 2D contours and drawings with no 3D or time dimension. To show how a mine site changes over time, the client's product needed to turn that data into a 3D view that plays back in the browser.
The challenge
The client needed to compare as-planned and as-mined data over time, across terrain and hundreds of thousands of objects, in a web browser. Flat contours had to become terrain meshes, and objects had to be extruded with their attributes. The scene then had to stay interactive while animating along a timeline, with meshing and cross-sectioning fast enough for live use.
Our solution
We built a 4D viewer (3D plus time) with three.js, React and WebGL. It imports open formats, meshes the terrain, and animates extruded objects and particles along a timeline.
- GeoJSON and DXF import
- 2D contours meshed into 3D terrain
- Contours generated from terrain cross-sections
- Custom extrusions with attributes
- Timeline filter and animation player
- Draggable legends and property windows, 3D compass and scale axes
- Dark and light themes, snapshots, full-screen mode and sunlight effects
Business impact
Smooth visualization of hundreds of thousands of extruded objects, with faster meshing and cross-sectioning.
- Planners and managers see plan versus actual progress on one timeline, instead of comparing separate drawings
- Survey data the client's users already hold becomes 3D without redrawing or re-surveying
- Stakeholders without desktop mining software can review site progress in a browser
- Features beyond the original brief made the client's product stronger for its own customers
We had some very advanced development requirements. Prolincur completed them successfully and on time… also added functionality that made the software even better than we envisioned.
