Business context

The client is a mining software company in the USA that sells planning software to mine operators. A mine plan draws on many inputs: schedules, fleet, stockpiles, haul roads, and ore and waste. When those inputs sit in separate tools, planners spend their time reconciling them, and the client's product covers only part of the job.

The challenge

The client wanted its users to create mine planning designs. Mine design is spatial. Roads and other features must follow the mining contours, and excavation changes the terrain as work progresses. The tool had to tie schedule, fleet and material data to that changing geometry, not just hold it in tables.

Our solution

We built a map-based planning and drawing tool with OpenLayers and three.js. Computational geometry generates features on the mine contours, and a 3D view shows excavation step by step. The tool links mine schedules, fleet management, stockpiling, road string management, ore and waste management, and other critical mine plan inputs.

  • Roads and other geospatial features generated on mining contours
  • Progressive 3D visualization of excavation work
  • Comparative studies of parameters such as elevation through a 2D legend
  • Data visualization for reports and scenario-based analysis

Business impact

All planning tasks integrated into one software, which made mine design and planning easier.

  • Planners see how a schedule changes the pit in 3D, so layout problems show up during design
  • Engineers check road layouts against the real contours instead of redrawing them by hand
  • Scenario views help planning teams compare options with data before they commit
  • The client's product covers more of the planning workflow, which strengthens its offer to mine operators
